Mr. Malcolm's List High Quality

The beautiful Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) attends the opera with the most eligible bachelor of the season, Mr. Jeremy Malcolm (Sope Dirisu). After she fails to impress him she is widely mocked in a caricature. Julia employs her cousin, the feckless Lord Cassidy, to see what she has done to offend Mr. Malcolm. Malcolm reveals to Cassidy that he has a list of requirements for a wife which Julia did not meet. Cassidy lets this slip to Julia who is offended.

Mr. Malcolm's List

The following day a now guilt-ridden Julia tries another scheme to reunite Malcolm and Selina, but is dissuaded by Ossery who confesses he has fallen in love with her. Mr. Malcolm and Selina later find themselves alone in the garden, and Mr. Malcolm accuses Selina of trying to trap him in an engagement; infuriated she wishes him luck with his list.

After Julia apologizes, Selina decides to leave for home. As she does, Mr. Malcolm's mother blames her son for Selina's departure revealing that she was the one who plotted to have the two alone in the garden. Mr. Malcolm chases after Selina and gives her a new list of everything he is looking for in a wife, the sole line reading "Selina Dalton".

Parents need to know that Mr. Malcolm's List is a period costume romantic drama with very little iffy content (other than some social drinking and smoking) -- think of it as "Bridgerton lite." Set in the early 19th century, it centers on the wealthy Mr. Malcolm's (Sope Dirisu) list of qualities that he requires in a wife. This idea plays into some stereotypes, but the movie also has strong female characters and a racially diverse cast. In addition to the brief scenes of drinking and smoking, there's a bit of gambling. But overall, the film -- which is based on Suzanne Allain's novel of the same name -- is generally light, entertaining, and tame enough for tweens.

In MR. MALCOLM'S LIST, a farcical plot unfolds in Regency England when society lady Julia (Zawe Ashton) is spurned by the eligible Mr. Malcolm (Sope Dirisu). The reason for this rejection? Because Julia doesn't meet the exacting standards on Mr. Malcolm's list. She recruits childhood friend Selina (Freida Pinto) to take revenge by pretending to be everything he desires. But can love really be manipulated so easily?

In the short film, or more precisely the Overture, (the film conceives the first ten minutes of the feature), the year is 1818. A wealthy, young lady named Julia engages in courtship with a mysterious wealthy suitor, Mr. Malcolm, unaware that he has a list of qualities required of a future wife.

One such bride-in-waiting is the wealthy and entitled Julia Thistlewaite (a pitch-perfect Zawe Ashton). She's a bit of a snoot and sees Mr. Malcolm as a means of cementing her position in society's upper-crust. But Jeremiah isn't a shallow man. He's looking for a bride with qualities beyond high standing and a flirty smile (gold-diggers and social climbers need not apply). Rather, Jeremiah is the kind and gentlemanly sort who has a literal list of qualifications for the woman he hopes to spend the rest of his life with.

So it's no surprise that the haughty Julia's date with the highly sought-after Mr. Malcolm flops. And after he doesn't extend a second call, her rejection becomes the talk of the public gossip circles. Adding to her humiliation, Julia learns of Mr. Malcolm's notorious list. So she enlists the help of her push-over cousin, Lord Cassidy (a slyly comical Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and the two immediately hatch a plan for revenge.

Julia calls on her childhood friend, Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto), a sweet rural girl and the daughter of a country vicar. The two first met as classmates at Mrs. Finch's Ladies Academy where they made a pact to always have each other's back. When Selina arrives at Julia's swanky London manor she reluctantly agrees to go along with her friend's scheme. It goes something like this: Train Selina to check off all the boxes on Mr. Malcolm's list, win his heart, and then turn around and give him a taste of his own medicine.

The plan: Selina will show him how she is the perfect woman, but will ultimately reject him, citing her own list of what she wants in the perfect husband. Of course, unforeseen circumstances and human emotions threaten to ruin the plan.

The trailer for "Mr. Malcolm's List," which debuted on May 25, stars Zawe Ashton as Julia Thistlewaite, who's jilted by Sope Dirisu's Mr. Malcolm after failing to meet his laundry list of qualifications for a bride. Feeling embarrassed by his actions, Julia enlists the help of her good friend, Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto), to assist her in a plan to fool Mr. Malcolm into thinking she's his ideal match.

"If we present you as the perfect woman, then he discovers he does not meet the requirements on your list, that would be a perfect sort of poetic justice," Ashton's Julia says in the clip. However, her vengeful plan goes awry when her ex-lover and friend begin to fall for one another. In the end, the puppet scheme will prove if this love story is simply a fairy tale or the real deal. 041b061a72
